Here at Lady Geek Girl and Friends we analyze geekdom from a religious, feminist, and queer perspective. Why those three things, you ask? Well, I’ll tell you.
I was brought up Catholic my whole life, though I have also been exposed to a wide variety of faith expressions, through both study and friends, which got me interested in studying Theology.
I’m a woman and proud! Being a woman can be difficult and challenging in an extremely male world. Some of my own personal experiences made me realize how important it was to take a strong stance for women everywhere and be a feminist. Psst! Men can be feminists too, by the way.
Many of my friends are members of the LGBTQ community, whether they are homosexual, bisexual, asexual, demisexual, pansexual, or any variance in between. This pushed me to be more active in striving for equality for all.
What does this have to do with the wide world of geekdom? Whether we realize it or not, art effects the way we think and perceive the world. Geekdom is no exception. Hulkling and Wiccan may shape someone’s opinion of gay relationships, Buffy may allow many men and women to realize how strong women can be, and Gandalf may teach us something about Christ and self-sacrifice.
The Scooby Gang here all agree that it is important to analyze and discuss the fandoms that have so shaped our lives and affected how we view the world.
And that’s why we do what we do.
