Trailer Tuesdays: Star Trek Into Darkness

Oh, Star Trek, why? Why are you making me so nervous about this sequel? I should be really excited about this sequel. But instead I’m worried and concerned for a whole variety of reasons and the trailer has done nothing to make me feel better.

First, why do we rarely see space in this trailer? Isn’t this sci-fi? Aren’t we going to STAR trek into darkness, as the title states? It’s great seeing weird planets and seeing a futuristic Earth being destroyed, but I can see that in any Michael Bay movie (not that I’d want to). What part of this trailer looks like Star Trek?

Secondly, Star Trek is supposed to be set in an optimistic sort of future, not a dark and gloomy one. In fact, during the last Star Trek movie J.J. Abrams clearly stated that they were not going to take the darker tone that is favored in movies like Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy in order to keep with the spirit of Star Trek. However, this trailer seems especially dark, and on top of that there is the movie poster, which looks very similar to the Batman movie poster.

It seems odd that a show like Star Trek seems to be using the aesthetics of Batman when the two styles clash fantastically. Stay true to yourself, Star Trek, and you will do well, but attempt to imitate past blockbusters and be prepared to fail.

Also, why are the Star Trek writers acting like a smug pregnant woman when it comes to Benedict Cumberbatch?

Fans: So Who is Benedict Cumberbatch playing Khan or Gary Mitchell from the TOS episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before”?

Writers: Oh, we know, but we’re not telling.

Fans: Well, you said he was playing a previously known Star Trek character, but recently a spoiler said he’s playing a character named John Harrison and nobody has any idea who that is. Is it a pseudonym or what? Who the hell is our villain?!

Writers: Oh, we know, but we’re not telling.

It’s like the Star Trek writers think that we should just be grateful that they cast Benedict Cumberbatch in any role at all, and while I am grateful, and I’m sure he will be awesome, I would like to know who he is playing just because it would possibly alleviate some of my concerns over who our villain is. Gary Mitchell would be interesting, but the trailer doesn’t seem to support that idea. And if Cumberbatch is playing Khan, well then, we have a white-washing issue, don’t we? And if it’s not either then who is it? Who are we fighting? Why should I care what is happening in this story if I don’t even know who the bad guy is?

Now this is just a teaser trailer so maybe I’m jumping the gun with the criticism. I guess we will just have to wait and see how things unfold. It’s only logical.

Until then, Star Trek, we’re watching you.
