Fanfiction Fridays: Light and Shadow by rufftoon

So today’s fanfiction is for Rise of the Guardians, but it is a little different from the norm. It’s actually a fan comic series that I found on deviantART. It chronicles Pitch’s time during the Dark Ages, and it talks about the things he fears, relationship with children, and why the Guardians first fought him and removed him from power.

More accurately, it’s numerous series that all take place in the same universe. The first series is called 1914, and shows Pitch and North talking on a deserted battlefield about an unspecified boy who lied about his age to enlist. As it ends, Pitch tells North that they will never have a Christmas truce again.

The next series, Light and Shadow, takes place back in the Dark Ages, and begins with Pitch laughing to an angry Sandy about people burning witches because they’re afraid of them.

I don’t want to talk too much about what happens in the numerous panels, because they don’t take that long to read through. What really captured my attention about them is the style, particularly the use of color. Pitch is the embodiment of fears and darkness, so I like how the story is told in black and white. The only color we see comes from things that can hurt Pitch, like Sandy, who is always shown as bright and golden, and the other Guardians. Furthermore, in 1914, North is also entirely in black in white, until later on when he’s battling Pitch and his overcoat is now a bright red.

Something else that I find interesting is that in the Light and Shadow run, Pitch comes across something that I could best describe as a light demon. After his encounter with this creature, a small child takes to following Pitch around, because Pitch is not a monster, in the words of the child. Also, nothing is as scary as the light demon, which Pitch is also running away from.

It only takes a few minutes to read through all the different panels, so this story is not a huge time commitment, and it’s really interesting, offering new insight into the characters. Go ahead and read it.
