Say you, perchance, want to read comic books. But maybe you don’t have the cash to spend on them. If only there were some sort of day where comic books were given away for free? Well, you are in luck, dear reader, because tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day.
What is Free Comic Book Day? Beyond what the name implies, it’s an event held at independent comic book shops across the US on the first Saturday of May every year. Depending on the shop, there may be festivities, or there may just be a table with a pile of comics on it, but hey, they’re free!
Of course, it isn’t a free-for-all, no pun intended. You can’t just bust in and start grabbing books left and right. Nah, there’s a specific set of comics that the various big and small publishing houses put out especially for the occasion, and you can check them out here.
You can use the store locator on the Free Comic Book Day website to find a store near you. If you’re going to go, I recommend you get there earlier rather than later—Lady Bacula and I went in the late afternoon last year and our local shop was already out of free stuff. (Of course, that was a blessing in disguise, since I ended up buying Runaways Vol. 1 and falling headfirst into American comics fandom, so your mileage may vary.)
Go see if there’s a store around you, and hit it up for some free stuff tomorrow!
