First Footage of Legend of Korra Book Two! Also, Related Comics and Zuko’s Mom!

It’s here! The first footage of new Legend of Korra is here, and I have been freaking out for days. Someone hold me.

If you are like me, you’ve probably spent a long time waiting for the second installment of the Legend of Korra, entitled Book Two: Spirits. The last episode of the first season aired on 23 June 2012, meaning that we’ve all been waiting a year now to see what comes next. That’s not to say that we’ve been entirely in the dark. We’ve been getting hints here and there from other huge fans like AvatarPatel (whose Youtube channel is intense and replete with sneak peeks and fan theories), and there was that highly revelatory panel at last year’s Comic-con. This video is finally bringing home some of that delicious bacon. But don’t stop reading yet!

Since I’m here, let me turn you on to something you might not have heard about over the sound of your mouth watering for new Korra over the past year. Two trilogies of comics, The Promise and The Search, aimed in part at filling the gap between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are out there for your consumption. The Promise deals with the future of Team Avatar as they put themselves to the hefty task of keeping the world in order, all while performing other minor duties like teaching metalbending and ruling the Fire Nation. It engages with serious topics like how two cultures can exist together and create an identity on both a personal and a national level, and what it means to be dutiful not only to moral good, but also to the lives of people for whom one is responsible

The Search, on the other hand, while not shying away from its own share of issues, is writ a little more narrowly in terms of subject matter. The trilogy primarily revolves around what actually happened to Zuko’s mother, explaining the backstory behind a seriously complicated family relationship. And just to make you feel robbed of some brilliant television, creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dimartino have revealed that they opted to have The Search created because Nickelodeon wasn’t interested in a TV movie that would tell the same story. That being said, they did opt to pick up Korra, so I guess we should take the good with bad.

Both trilogies are written by the brilliant Gene Yang, whose graphic novel American Born Chinese was a finalist for a National Book Award, and illustrated by art team Gurihiru, and they maintain well the TV show’s mix of drama, action and jocularity. They’re well worth your time and money, frankly. All three issues of The Promise have been released, along with the first issue of The Search. The second issue will be released on July 10 and the third on October 30.
