Fanfiction Fridays: Saving Victoria Chase (again and again and again) by cinnamonsnaps

Full disclaimer: I haven’t played Life Is Strange.

The episodic title from Dontnod Entertainment has almost been out for seven months and four chapters of its story have been released to the public; still, I haven’t actually taken the time to sit down and play through it (mostly because I don’t really like the idea, or execution, of episodic games). Instead, I’ve taken to the internet to watch Let’s Players go through the various chapters… which is actually to say I’ve watched someone play through the most recent chapter, “Dark Room”. So, upon emerging from what could possibly be the most fucked up chapter in the whole series—a lot more fucked up than a lot of things I’ve seen in many, many other games—I decided that instead of watching the rest of the game to catch up, I’d turn to fanfic to soothe my broken heart. My logic is sound, trust me.

Life is Strange BannerI have a lot of potential love for the series’s main ship—protagonist Max Caulfield and rebel with a cause Chloe Price—but even with series I don’t know, apparently, I like to see relationships from a different angle. And, well, if you give me an enemies/annoyances to friends (to lovers) dynamic—which is the only thing school bully and HBIC Victoria Chase could be—you’ve pretty much got my heart. This is exactly what drew me to Saving Victoria Chase (again and again and agai).

Fanfiction Fridays: Let the Punishment Fit the Crime by owlmoose

I figured it was about time to switch fandoms in my search for femslash, and given my current parameters—games that allow for character creation—I figured there was no better choice than to finally dip my feet into the Dragon Age fandom. I’d seen some fantastic fic already from this fandom, but none of it was femslash. Needless to say, I was pretty excited about looking. Unfortunately, the search ended up being a load of trouble: maybe it’s just my inadequate searching skills, but the amount of femslash was much, much smaller than I was anticipating. (I may have been excited, but I did not set my standards high.) I’ve resolved myself to look again, but for now I’ve found a short fic that satiates my need and features one of my favorite friendships in Dragon Age 2.

The ladies in this game aren't anyone to trifle with.

The ladies in this game aren’t anyone to trifle with.

When writing for the pairing or friendship of Aveline and Isabela, I’ve noticed a trend of making Aveline this shrinking violet in the presence of Isabela’s sexual prowess, and I have to wonder if these authors even played the same game I did. Isabela may be a pirate queen who owns her sexuality, but Guard Captain Aveline is not known for backing down or batting an eyelash at anything vulgar. In the game, I believe the one conversation between them that defines their relationship entirely is:

Aveline: You’re right.

Isabela: About?

Aveline: About knowing who you are.

Aveline: I’m the captain of the guard. I’m loyal, strong, and I don’t look too bad naked.

Isabela: Exactly. And if I called you a mannish, awkward, ball-crushing do-gooder, you’d say…?

Aveline: Shut up, whore.

Isabela: That’s my girl.

From this, the respect they share for each other is obvious, but it’s also easy to see where certain facets can be eschewed to the point of ruining the nuances that make the relationship so interesting in the first place. In the aptly named Let the Punishment Fit the Crime, author owlmoose refuses to fall into that trap and gives the audience a very real picture of the blooming friendship between these two strong women.

Fanfiction Fridays: Lying is such a Weakness

[Spoilers for Dangan Ronpa]

On the outside, Dangan Ronpa is a game about kids murdering each other under various circumstances. However, should you choose to look a little closer, the game contains a slew of important issues that the fandom has more than picked up on and discussed. From exalting Sakura’s femininity, which is expressed in a physique that lies outside of the stereotypical female body shape, to Fukawa’s neurosis, caused by many layers of abuse, the game offers up snippets of deep characterization. Unfortunately, since at the end of the day it is a game about kids murdering each other, there’s not a lot of time to go over every important issue. One specific topic that’s overlooked almost entirely is the representation of one Chihiro Fujisaki’s gender.

Fanfiction Fridays: Gospel of Deception by thereisafire

Durarara!!’s Orihara Izaya is a multifaceted figure full of mystery and trickery. I’ve even heard a fan theory that he’s actually Loki, the Norse god of chaos, michief, and trickery, in human guise.

This fic sadly does not explore that facet of fanon. (Although if someone wants to write me that DRRR/Avengers crossover I didn’t know I wanted until just now, PLEASE DO IT.)

Rather, it boasts the fascinating pairing of Izaya/Trolling, and gets you inside Izaya’s head with backstory on how he becake the horribly manipulative person he is today, going all the way up to him getting Shizuo arrested. It’s terribly clever and well-written, and the author’s Izaya!voice is really spot-on.

Check it out here at AO3!

Fanfiction Fridays: Howabout a crossover?

I avoid crossover fic like the plague. It just takes so much to be done right, and I have gotten finicky about what I’ll actually spend time reading these days.

So here’s the backstory to the discovery of this fic: When I was about 13, I read all the existing Les Miserables fanfic on the internet. Like literally all of it. A few months ago, I realized that the Archive of Our Own (aka AO3), being a relatively new fanfiction archive, might have untapped Mizzie fanfic for the reading, and I happily wandered over to their Les Mis section.

Imagine my confusion when, amidst all the sad stories of doomed gay revolutionary love, I discovered this title:

“The Host Club’s Refreshing Interdimensional Tour

It… it couldn’t be.

Did they mean… Ouran High School‘s host club?

Oh, yes, they did.

The premise of this beautiful work of staggering beauty: Tamaki, having been unfortunately allowed to watch some sci-fi, decides he wants a time machine. A staggering investment of Ohtori funds later, the club finds themselves with a dimension-hopping vehicle, which they dub “Super-Delicious Strawberry Cake, since no one can think of a good reason to object”.

They visit (among other stories) the Enterprise circa Star Trek TOS, Sunnydale, the Fire Nation, the Andes ofThe Emperor’s New Groove, and Amestris, wreaking havoc and leaving greatness in their wake.

This fic is great for a number of reasons: the characterization is spot-on, making it seem like this is just a lost episode of OHSHC that never aired. The writing is clever and often hilarious, and the situations presented are goofy but perfect. (Honey and Mori fight in the 1832 June Rebellion for the revolutionaries, with whom half-French Tamaki sympathizes extraordinarily, hence why this was tagged in the Les Mis section of AO3.)

Anyway, this fic is perfect and hilarious and you should all go read it now. Find it here at the Archive of Our Own.
