Remember when we used to review Supernatural on this blog? Remember how Supernatural does a terrible job with all its female characters (and characters of color)? Well, something weird happened this past season: Supernatural actually had some interesting female characters on screen. And some of them didn’t die. And word on the street is that the Supernatural creative team is looking to start another Supernatural spinoff, even after the last one failed in an extremely boring manner. Will their next attempt be just as boring? Or will the team take the internet up on its incredibly awesome idea: Wayward Daughters?

The Road So Far: Season 10 Midseason Review
I have actually been keeping up, more or less, with this season of Supernatural, and despite everything… I’ve kind of… been enjoying myself? Don’t get me wrong; the show still fails on every feminist count: the only people of color are demons (and even then, they’re rare); there are dead women in almost every episode, and the queerbaiting is still outrageous. But Supernatural has been, well, somewhat entertaining. The 200th episode was excellent, and many of the other episodes were also pretty fun. Unfortunately, the writers don’t seem to know what they want to talk about in Season 10, and they seem to be using Season 8’s strategy of throwing every possible plot at a wall and seeing what sticks. This in turn has led to a lot of plotlines with good potential being left by the wayside.
Spoilers after the jump.
Fanfiction Fridays: Second Generation Roll Call
One of my favorite types of fanfiction is the fix-it fic, which takes an upsetting plot point from the source material and twists it into a happy ending. And out of all the series I’ve watched or read, the one that forces me to turn to fix-it fic most often is, without a doubt, Supernatural. Save maybe only Torchwood, the Supernatural series is meaner to its characters than any other show I can think of, and its writers often leave the audience with depressing or unsatisfying conclusions as far as supporting or minor character arcs are concerned. In short, Supernatural‘s storylines are ripe for the picking when it comes to ideas for fix-it fic.
Author orange_8_hands’s Second Generation Roll Call series is an interesting sort of fix-it fic, in part because this kind of fic generally tends to provide a fluffy, happy ending to a canonically upsetting scene. This story instead takes the stories of Claire Novak and Ben Braeden, Castiel and Dean’s kids-but-not-really, and rewrites their conclusions to be more realistic in terms of Supernatural‘s canon. And as any Supernatural fan knows, if you’re in any way connected to Cas or the Winchesters, there are no happy endings.
