Fanfiction Fridays: A Family of Trees Wanting To Be Haunted by Duck_Life

Star Wars Leia and HanI love Darth Vader—ever since I saw him first walk onto the screen in A New Hope he has become my all-time favorite character. I also love Leia. She’s a badass princess of the galaxy who helps the Rebels win against the Empire, before going on to become a General in her own right and commanding the Resistance against the First Order. Despite being father and daughter, however, the two don’t have all that many interactions on screen. I always found this unfortunate, as getting to explore Leia’s relationship with her father could very well have been interesting and compelling. After all, Vader has done far worse to Leia than he ever did to Luke, and therefore reconciling these two characters seems a much harder task.

Thankfully, fanfiction is here to save the day.

Throwback Thursdays: The Empire Strikes Back

empire strikes backThe Force Awakens is still everyone’s favorite thing right now, and without the ability to see that movie over and over again, I decided to start re-watching the original movies non-stop, just because I can. Now, I suppose if I am going to review the original movies it would make sense to start with A New Hope, but The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite of the original trilogy. Heck, it’s probably my favorite Star Wars movie ever (though Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens are close contenders), and right now I’m going to tell you why.

Trailer Tuesdays: Star Wars Rebels Mid-Season 2

The second half of Rebels’s latest season has already started airing and we’re already a few episodes in, so I am getting to this trailer just a little late. Regardless, with the exception of Leia’s introduction, most of what we see in the trailer hasn’t happened yet. This is unfortunate, because every moment of this trailer is filled with awesome, and so far, the same looks to be true for all the actual episodes. Take a look:

Oh, my God, this is one of the best things ever.

Motherhood in Geekery

goodmorningcronoThis post is quite obviously two days late; Mother’s Day has come and gone. I’m-a apologize for that, but it kind of goes to point I want to make: mothers and motherhood get remarkably short shrift in pop culture in general and geek culture in particular.

For the most part, moms just don’t exist. Where they do, they’re either saintly and loving, or creepy and weird. Archetypes without full characterization. Which is all to say, it’s time we do better.

Fanfiction Fridays: Misunderstood by Quill of Molliemon

Anakin and PadmeAfter the Star Wars prequels came out, I found myself a little disenchanted with the entirety of the universe. Let’s face it, Episodes I–III were really bad. Poor characterization, plot holes, the works. To this day, I still don’t even understand why the events in Episode I even warranted a movie, since that entire film could probably be cut and the franchise would lose very little.

Coming to my rescue, however, and restoring my love for the Star Wars Universe, was Misunderstood by Quill of Molliemon.

In Brightest Day(ish): Luke Skywalker

So yesterday, I focused on the anger issues with Star Wars’ Anakin Skywalker. I said that Anakin’s problems seemed to border on a disorder, and named IED as an example of a possible disorder that Anakin had to deal with on the road to the Dark Side of the Force.

On the other end of the scale is Anakin’s son, Luke Skywalker.

Web Crush Wednesdays: Top 10 Fan Videos

Usually for Web Crush Wednesdays I post about a particular site, project, or person, but today we are going to do something different. There are a ton of awesome nerd videos out there and today I’m going to give my TOP 10 favorite videos.

10.

A sexy little video between Batman and Catwoman that captures their relationship better that many big budget Batman movies.

9.

Because there can never be enough raps about how awesome Firefly/Serenity is.

8.

So  raise your glass if you are wrong, in all the right ways!!

7.

You don’t always need your own script or actors to make a good fan video. Sometimes simply the right clips and some good music is enough. “Supernatural bringing you more creepy children. Sigh!”

6.

This is why you don’t piss off the Katamari gods!!

5.

Spike sure has run into some creepy characters. This video actually won for Best Dramatic/Serious AMV at Otakon’s 2010 AMV Contest!

4.

Will the real sugar baby please stand up!?

3.

If this doesn’t make you tear up from Harry Potter nostalgia I don’t know what will.

2.

Darth Vadar plays an accordion! Nuff Said!

1.

I LOVE fake trailers! But this one most of all! It will have you screaming, “Why isn’t this real!”

I hope after seeing these videos you have as much of a web crush on their creators as I do!

An Inherent Disaster: The Inheritance Trilogy—I mean, Cycle

Yeah, I’ve recently come to conclusion that Inheritance Cycle sucks about as much as the title of this post. So quite a lot.

The last book of the series recently came out this month—and about time too, as we’ve only been waiting three years for the damn thing—and I have been planning to do a review of the series for a while now. So now that it’s out, I might as well get started.

Spoilers and a trigger warning for rape after the jump.
