I Sure Did Watch the Pete’s Dragon Remake

Petes Dragon Remake PosterWell, this movie was… nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, especially considering how bad the trailers were. Overall, the remake has gotten a lot of favorable reviews and ratings, and while I can see where those opinions come from, I wasn’t exactly blown away by the story. On the whole, I’d say that the remake is cute and harmless, and it’s most certainly not a carbon copy of the original. The plot isn’t half-bad either, but the story is just so derivative that you’d be better off spending your time watching something else, like Ghostbusters.

Trailer Tuesdays: Pete’s Dragon 2016 Official Trailer

A little while ago, I reviewed the teaser trailer for this movie, and my initial impression was that it looked too dark and muted. Thankfully, the newer trailers make the movie seem much brighter and more in line with the original in terms of tone. Unfortunately, something about the remake still seems a little off to me, and I finally realized what it is: the dragon is a total dick in this version.

Trailer Tuesdays: Pete’s Dragon 2016

I’m not sure how I feel about this remake. If I had to guess, I’d say cautiously optimistic, but not overly so. Although I take some issues with the original, I love the 1977 version of this movie and thus far the 2016 version looks as if it’ll be similar in name only. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, per se. After all, remakes need to be different enough to set themselves apart from the original. But if this trailer is anything to go by, the 2016 Pete’s Dragon looks as if it’s going to be much darker and serious, and that’s my biggest problem with it thus far.

Throwback Thursdays: Pete’s Dragon

Once again, this is not the Throwback I planned to write. Unfortunately, being sick for the past two weeks and being a compulsive procrastinator put a damper on playing all the way through StarCraft: Brood War, which is what I originally planned to talk about. Instead of participating in something so interactive, I decided to park my ass on the couch and watch movies. Seeing as it’s been near twenty years since I first watched Pete’s Dragon, I decided it was time for a re-watch, especially since the movie is getting remade.

petes-dragon-pete-elliott-applesPete’s Dragon is by no means the best movie from my childhood, and watching it again in my mid-twenties really puts that into perspective. Some parts of the movie don’t make much sense at all, the editing and scene changes are fairly choppy, and the characters have a habit of doing and saying things that the plot demands, regardless of how they acted in previous scenes. Despite all that, the story is still something I hold dear and immensely enjoyed.
