The Road So Far: Season 10 Midseason Review

I have actually been keeping up, more or less, with this season of Supernatural, and despite everything… I’ve kind of… been enjoying myself? Don’t get me wrong; the show still fails on every feminist count: the only people of color are demons (and even then, they’re rare); there are dead women in almost every episode, and the queerbaiting is still outrageous. But Supernatural has been, well, somewhat entertaining. The 200th episode was excellent, and many of the other episodes were also pretty fun. Unfortunately, the writers don’t seem to know what they want to talk about in Season 10, and they seem to be using Season 8’s strategy of throwing every possible plot at a wall and seeing what sticks. This in turn has led to a lot of plotlines with good potential being left by the wayside.

Another Tuesday, another episode of Supernatural. Honestly, we here at Lady Geek Girl and Friends have made our frustration with the show pretty clear, so we’re just going to review this episode and the finale and focus on shows like Teen Wolf and Sleepy Hollow instead. We’ve been pretty down on Supernatural, but it doesn’t seem like the show will ever get any better. If it does, we’ll be back. Until then, let’s look at how Dean reacted after the events of last episode.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

This week marks the return of the amazing Sheriff Jody Mills, yet last week’s promo made it seem like this entire episode was going to be based around dumb virgin jokes. But like we said in our last review, Supernatural’s managed to go four episodes without tripping over its own feet—could it add an unprecedented fifth to its record?

Answer: no. Hit the jump to find out why.

The Road So Far: “Dog Dean Afternoon” Review

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK, IDJIT!

After last week’s weird promo in which Dean did a Vulcan mind-meld with a dog, I’d pre-emptively written off this episode as bad. Just no two ways about it, straight-up pure uncut terrible. So you can imagine my surprise when the episode turned out to be… sort of funny. If you didn’t stop to think about it, it was almost… enjoyable. It wasn’t even written by Robbie Thompson, but I… liked it?

Spoilers… after the jump.

The Road So Far: “Pac-Man Fever” Review

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK, IDJIT!

I have to admit, I went into this episode expecting some fun and games. Given that it was an episode which featured Charlie Bradbury, was written by the excellent Robbie Thompson, and was (I can only assume) named after the infamous “Pac-Man Fever” song, some fun and games ought to be expected, right? However, while the episode was indeed chock-full of the pop culture references and geeky asides that have come to characterize Thompson-penned episodes, “Pac-Man Fever” had an impassioned heart to its comedy that previous Charlie episodes lacked.
